Meta and Apple: A Rare Technical Collaboration

On October 15, Meta released Muse Spark Open, an open-weight model, and announced that it has been optimized to run locally on two Mac Studio systems equipped with the M5 Ultra chip. This marks a rare public collaboration between the two companies since 2017.

The two have a long history of confrontation over privacy rules and the advertising ecosystem. In 2021, Apple introduced App Tracking Transparency, a change Meta estimated reduced its 2022 revenue by approximately $10 billion. During the 2018 Cambridge Analytica incident, executives from both companies publicly criticized each other.

Model Specifications and Capabilities

1792393564930.jpgMuse Spark Open uses a sparse mixture-of-experts architecture with 816 billion total parameters and roughly 42 billion activated per token. It supports a 1-million-token context window and natively accepts text, image, video, and audio input. Meta completed the optimization through Apple's MLX framework: a single M5 Ultra Mac Studio provides up to 512GB of unified memory, so two systems together offer about 1TB — enough to hold the full model. The chip's 1.2TB/s memory bandwidth supports reading the parameter slices required for each token.

Meta positions Muse Spark Open as the most capable US open-weight model to date. In the published benchmark comparisons, the model scored 89.2 on MCP-Atlas for tool use, the highest in Meta's comparison table. However, it scored 76.4 on Terminal-Bench 2.1, below Kimi K3(85.0) and GLM 5.3(83.9). Artificial Analysis, a third-party evaluator, assigned it an intelligence index of 39, with several open models ranking above it. The weights are released under the Muse Model License with limited commercial terms, so the release is not an unrestricted open-source model.
